Moonkin 101 for Cata 85

Not much has changed, really. Most of the additional talent points are optional to do with as you see fit. If you're having mana issues, consider picking up Furor in Feral, since you'll get more mana back per eclipse proc that way.

Stat priority is still:
int > spirit/hit (to hit cap) > haste > crit/mastery

Crit is a bit better than mastery right now, but once we're in full raid gear mastery may be slightly better than crit. In either case, reforge out of them both into other things (haste if you can, spirit if you can't so spirit can become haste from someplace else).

The Hit cap for 85 is 1742.
Not that it is a huge worry anytime soon, but natures grace can soft cap haste at 3102.
If you can hit that haste cap, and refresh dots during NG, you can get an extra 4 dot ticks at this point, so I would strive for it.

The new Meta Gem is the Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond. Both it and the lvl 80 version we were using are supposed to go back to being 2 blue gems, rather than more blue than red gems as it states now. However, if you want to activate it now, put spirit on the other end of every gem and reforge everything away from spirit/hit. Expect to want to regem again once they fix the meta though.

Moonkin 101 for 4.0.1

OK, so 4.0.1 has entirely changed the game, here is what you need to know.

1) Go to your trainer and learn everything, lots of things need to be trained (again) such as Bear Form.
2) Use this spec: http://wowtal.com/#k=15tOzTvD.a67.druid.dyfgnz
3) Put your abilities back in your bars, and add the new one (Starsurge).
4) Sell your reagents, you won't need them anymore.
5) Visit your friendly scribe or the AH. Pick up any druid glyphs you don't have (as you now "learn" a glyph and can apply it at will).

For the glyphs, follow the above spec. You may want to swap in/out the following for Major Glyphs depending on the situation: Focus (situational), Monsoon, Hurricane. I've included Rebirth, which isn't a dps glyph, but helps a lot if you ever need to brez, which we often do.

Now that your spec is all set, let's look at gear. Follow these simple rules:
1) Take off any cloth you have.
2) Put on the highest ilevel caster leather that you have (keeping your 4pc t10 of course).

The main things you need to know about stat changes:
1) You now need the full 17% hit. You will hit cap at 446 hit.
2) Spirit becomes hit, use it instead of hit when you can, because it also gives you mana back (this won't matter now, but it will as you level).
3) Int = spellpower (weapons and some trinket procs may still have spellpower, but everything else will have int).

Your stat priority looks like this:
Int > spirit (to hit cap) > hit (to cap) > haste > sp > crit > mastery

Now, gem everything to match socket bonus if the bonus is sp. If it isn't, put a pure int (red) gem in it. You should use:
Red: Brilliant Cardinal Ruby
Blue: Purified Dreadstone
Yellow: Reckless Ametrine

You will also want to go to Wyrmrest and Hodir to pick up the old healing head and shoulder enchants. The mp5 has turned to spirit and the sp to int. The sp/crit ones stayed sp/crit (so if you're on a budget or don't have the rep, they're still ok to keep using, but not optimal).

Now comes the fun...reforging. Chances are, you have extra hit and extra spirit, and you're finding yourself with less crit and haste than you had before. There is a reforging NPC by the enchanting trainer in Dalaran. You will want to get as close to the hit cap as you can (slightly over is better than slightly under). This works by first taking your gear with hit and reforging that. Reforge to the stat priorities above, each reforge will remove 40% of the stat and let you turn it into another secondary stat (haste, crit, spirit, mastery, hit) that isn't already on that item.

There you go, now you're ready except for the "how to play" part. So, here's the way your "rotation" works.
You have 5 main abilities: Moonfire (MF) which morphs into the exact spell but called Sunfire during solar eclipse, Insect Swarm (IS), Wrath (W), Starfire (SF), and the new one Starsurge (SS) which is on a medium cooldown. You continue to have 2 long cooldowns in Force of Nature and Starfall. You also have an eclipse bar with a sun at one end and a moon at the other (just under your player portrait in the default UI). In order to do maximum dps, you will always want to keep the eclipse bar progressing one way or another.

In order to do that, you should know that only 3 spells move the bar: SF, W, SS. SF will move the bar from the Lunar side towards the Solar side and W will move the bar from the Solar to the Lunar. SS is unique in that it will always move the bar in the best direction. It is important to note that the bar will only move in one direction until it gets all the way to the other end, at which point you trigger the eclipse. You should generally treat your spells as a priority:
Instant SS > MF > IS > SS > W or SF depending on which eclipse.

There is a little debate over that vs having a more strict timing for MF (since it is what gives us the haste buff once we proc an eclipse), but in general it is better to have it ticking than to wait, and you won't waste the haste buff anyway, you'll simply trigger it at a different time...which isn't a problem since eclipses are now based on number of casts, rather than time. It is also helpful since your talents will let you clear the cooldown on SS and also turn it into an instant as a chance per dot tick. I say prioritize MF over IS because both dots are affected by haste (and crit) now, so you want to proc the haste from MF before casting IS.

A couple quick notes on spells for AoE. Hurricane and Starfall are now effected by their respective Solar and Lunar eclipses to make them more powerful. Starfall has unfortunately lost all its splash damage, so you just get 20 stars now with 2+ targets or 10 with 1.

There you have it, the basics for Boomkin in patch 4.0.1. Look for an update soon™ for Bears, as I and some others try out various proposed specs and rotations.

Keeping track of procs/cooldowns - Power Auras

I've recently talked with several boomkin who have had trouble getting up their dps, even in gear with little enough haste that continual spell queuing is still possible. After some analisys, I noticed that they didn't cast as many starfall, treants, etc...or didn't make smart use of a haste pot in a non-bloodlust fight. To help with that right now, I want to talk about an addon, PowerAuras.
I also suggest you get used to this style of tracking, since it is built into the Cataclysm WoW client.

Let's take the no-addon person first. To catch procs, you're constantly scanning through different spots in your buff table, looking for icons and their durations, and hoping not to miss one. For cooldowns, you're looking at the opposite side (bottom) of the screen for when your abilities become available again, all while trying to watch what the boss is doing and where you are. Clearly, this is horrible from the perspective of getting the info you need.

Second, let's take somebody using any of the various cooldown tracker addons. Most of these, including the wonderful squawk and awe, use bars to show you how long you have something up, or how long you need to wait. This at least puts everything in one place for you, lets you see cooldowns (which you had no way of seeing except for your castable abilities). Much better, and viable, but not the easiest way to get information since we're still comparing many bars and trying to find which one is what we want info on right now.

So now let's look at Power Auras. We can display pictures (and timers) for things, along with sounds if desired. In my case, I always used to forget about starfall and treants long enough to miss getting them up anywhere near as much (something that apparently is common). I also used to drop my dots (back when we always wanted them both up all the time, like it seems we will again in cataclysm). I also found it really REALLY annoying to move, not proc eclipse, and then have wasted an eclipse, or tried to proc the wrong one (thinking it was off of cooldown, or thinking that I still had time before I could proc). I would also occasionally miss the eclipse if a lot was going on, or think another boomkin's eclipse that was stacked with me was my own. To solve this, I've turned to PowerAuras. I display a larger eclipse type graphic above my head, with a countdown timer, eclipse cooldown graphics smaller near it, treant and starfall availability (or countdown to being available), my haste procs on crit to make sure hurricane is hasted, and various trinket/ability procs stack up below (though I don't watch their cooldowns). This makes it really easy to see what's going on and keep things up that need to be (like insect swarm for mitigation on progression content).

Note: I track DFO, but not other trinkets (since I don't have them), the ooc t10 proc, and the ring proc. If you wish to track others, you can simply duplicate the item in power auras and use your proc's name instead. You can also track debuffs, but I leave that up to your own fooling with the mod, as that is usually more of a per-boss thing.

If you want to try my setup, here's how:
1) type /powa to open up power auras
2) click on the import set button
3) paste in the following and click ok. (wall 'o text incoming)

Speed tip confirmed

So, I took myself to task to up my DPS, as it seemed fairly far off from spreadsheets, rather than somewhat close.
The last post was the result of that and some dummy testing. So how did I do?

Well, I did quite well. I went from being about 85% for ranking status on most 10 mans to being a top record holder on many of the fights (as according to World of Logs). Needless to say, faster fingers do wonders when dealing with below GCD haste levels.

Are you fast enough?

This question is a larger question than you might think, and all aspects of it are valid to ask and discuss.

Firstly, are you fast enough to be observant?
Then, are you fast enough to move (usually out of the way of something bad)?
Are you fast enough to react to a raidlead's instruction (brez, adjust, etc)?
For these 3, and other similar issues, please see my previous post on raid awareness, much of it applies to how quickly you are aware, reducing the time it takes you to do everything else.

Can you move fast enough to get out of said problem?
AKA, do you use tustkar's or cat's swiftness? Do you make use of travel form, sprint/dash, blink, rocket boots?
If you can't say yes to any of the above...you need to.

Lastly, and my main focus and inspiration for this, are you fast enough to do max dps?
Let's assume you can stand in 1 spot and never have to move (since all of that is covered in the above areas).
You will have 3 main things that determine how fast you can cast and get a spell out.

1) Do you have enough haste?
Make sure you're at LEAST at the soft haste cap (roughly 400 as a boomkin with full raid buffs).
Get more, more is better.

2) Is your ping/latency low enough?
There are many ways that people go about dropping this, but they all boil down to network settings changes. The simple and easy answer is to look up leatrix latency fix for you Windows users, their faq also has info on how to do the same via command line on Mac. Sometimes it helps, other times it doesn't. Some folks, especially in other countries from their game server, will use a third party game proxy service. You're aiming for something in the <50 range, but even 200 is playable. If you have huge latency, especially as a boomkin, use crit instead of haste once above the soft cap, or just pure SP (as most do anyway).

3) Do you understand how spell queueing works? How about for instants or shorter than GCD casts?
Let's take the easy example of Starfire (since it will pretty much never be non-queued).
When you cast starfire, it takes longer than the GCD. Once the GCD is done AND the spell is about to finish, you can press it again and it will be queued. This lets the server start casting it as soon as the other spell is done, for a net result of no lost cast time. The most effective way to get this to happen is simply to spam your cast key, so you'll get into that queue window asap, even if you have bad latency.

Now let's look at a spell like wrath (which will drop below the GCD cast time easily once in mostly 264 gear, when you proc on crit, if not before). I'll use me as an example. wrath takes .7 sec to cast, the GCD is 1 sec, so I have a minimum theoretical time of .3 sec every sec of not being casting. This is how any kind of dps spreadsheet or RAWR will look at things, for the most part.

Now let's look at how this is implemented, technically. You press the wrath keybind (you're not clicking are you?), your client checks to make sure you're not inside the GCD...if you are it throws away the keypress, then it checks to see if you're CC'd or unable to cast for some other reason...if so it throws out the keypress, then it checks to see if you're casting...if you are, and you're not in the queueable window, it throws away the keypress...then it sends the wrath command to the server (internet latency), then the server checks to make sure you're not doing anything else, then the server executes your command. This is where a lot of people end it, but it is important to note the next step too. Your client doesn't start the GCD (local on the client) until the server tells your client (internet latency), that your command has started.

Now that you know how it works, let's talk about speeding up Wrath casting. The average button spammer hits the keyboard about 4-5 times per second. For the sake of simplicity, I'm going to use 5 times/sec, which means you hit the key every .2 seconds on average. So, looking at our wrath example, you cast, get back a gcd, at which point you need to INSTANTLY hit the wrath button. In our average situation, you're going to miss by anywhere from almost nothing to .2 seconds. .2 sec on a spell that only takes 1 sec (only because of the GCD) is fairly significant...making it up to a 20% increase in cast time used for 1 cast. Clearly, the answer is to "FACEROLL HARDER!" Seriously though, we need to generate more wrath commands faster, so that we loose less time doing nothing. Bliz has stated that programable keyboards and such are violations of the ToS and User Agreement, and can result in a ban...but there is an easy answer. Most people can use 2 fingers alternately, almost as effectively as a single one. So, if you use...say, 2, as your wrath button. Put wrath into the 3 slot as well and use 2 fingers to mash on it. You won't be consistant with 1 vs the other, one will probably end up slower sometimes or get you off pattern, but just try to get comfortable with alternating fingers to hit the keys. This can bring your tap time down easily to about .1 sec instead of .2...which means now you do 10% more dps while casting wrath (assuming your latency is reasonable).

This is applicable to any chain casting class that is hitting the GCD with the same spell, including restos using intants and mouseover targets. Please let me know if this helps you too! :)

Progression Update

Hey everybody. I've been busy with my new job and enjoying my, and my wife's, birthdays. Sorry for the lack of posts.

A quick update on progression. We've been working on RS 25 HM for a while now...and have come to a saddening realization.
We just don't have the gear. We are now at a point where we do the fight without people dying, and have a solid P3 attempt almost every time, but even when P3 is perfectly balanced, we don't quite have the dps output to beat the enrage timer. Thankfully, for those of you not trying for top server or world spots, this is pretty much a non-issue in heroic 10, and is definitely not an issue in 25 normal.

As a result, we're not going to try LK HM 25 instead. It is a "harder" fight, but the fight is not a gear check (except perhaps on healers and a tank), but more of an awareness check. We're good at that in general, so we'll see how this works out. We pulled LK twice last night after clearing everything else, and both were P2 attempts. We need to work on logistics of who stuns/kills which valks, and getting everybody stacked up a little better so that the valks literally stay on top of each other for cleaves, rather than mostly sorta going the same way. I have no doubt that will be taken care of tonight and we'll get to enjoy the fun that is P3. :)

Progression update

Unfortunately we were short a couple of our core raiders in the kill. But we went into ICC, downed a lot of things...did horrible on the first attempt of PP, then killed it cleaner than normal. After that, it was on to progression, Sindragosa HM. We were all elated to have 1 shot it. I think we got helped out a bit here, because our shaman, who is one of the best healers we have, never got unchained magic in the fight. But, no complaints, really...if I can still output 5-6k hps through the course of the fight and take unchained off of most other heals by getting it...every...single...time...that's a good thing. :)

This now pushes us to 11/12 HM in ICC 25 (have long been farming that on 10 man), and RS down in 10 and 25 as well. HM RS attempts, and soon HM LK attempts should be coming asap as well. It is exciting to see and fun to do. :)

Halion HM

So, I went in and put down a couple hours of attempts on Halion in heroic 10 man last night on my mage to study it.
Once again, mage mechanics are completely OP in this fight due to having blink, absorbtion, and an often unused ability mage armor. But let me get down to specifics of the fight.

Boss has 4.5mil or so more health.
In general abilities you should've avoided before, but didn't care much in normal, you now have to actually care about (where the debuff is dropped and how fast, standing in fire, etc).
Tail swipe appears to still just be a stun, though especially in twilight with beams...that can easily kill you.

P1 in 10 man doesn't really change at all. No fire elementals (25 hm only), just things hit harder and debuffs need to be dropped smartly so as not to blow up others in the raid.

P2 adds an extra set of spheres, so instead of staying in half the room, you stay in 1/4 the room. Other than that, nothing but the usual heroic mode (hits harder, has more health) is different. That being said, the twilight aura that ticks raid wide shadow damage is actually significant here, and took all 3 of the heals we had to keep people up.

Placement of the debuff drops is key. As the mage, it was easy, blink out, decurse myself, run back in. Others used rocket boots, and rogues/druids sprint/dash to get out quickly. In heroic though, if you wait too long, or you're too close, you will wipe the raid easily by not doing this. Stop mid cast as soon as you get the debuff and run. Maybe it was due to caring to run away, but the circles dropped appeared to grow much faster per time the debuff was left on than in normal.

Strategy:
We were tanking the physical realm at an angle along the edge, allowing for the whole room to run away into and drop the debuff, this seemed to work pretty well, with people generally stacked up near the middle. This becomes important for 2 reasons.

1) Debuffs have 3/4 of the edges of the room to get towards where they can drop the fire spot.
2) The fire spots left on the ground DO NOT disappear when you go into shadow (they do over time, just as if you were staying in physical though).

So, if you were not quite in the right place and you left a patch of fire on physical side near the middle...you've now made it so that melee either have to not dps at a period of time or wipe...and if you get the debuff in that same area (while spinning around with the beams), then you pretty much are gonna just wipe, since the debuffed person going to the edge will probably hit most people who are standing away from the fire spot, pulling them to the outside and wiping the raid.

We were using the strategy of tanking the boss in the middle in p2 and rotating it, much as we did in my guild's 25 man. This seemed to work fairly well...it was amazing when we didn't move until the spheres charged up, allowing full ranged dps for most of the time since not having to move, and allowing debuffs to be more easily placed next to each other near the edges. Other strats I've seen tank the boss here along the edge. I don't recommend this though, due to making debuff dropping harder (less space that isn't on/near somebody) and constant kiting.

We didn't make it to p3, but it was more than I expected for a pug, and a decent chance to actually analyze the fight in heroic. With guild tanks and heals being quite a bit better, I'm hopeful for a real chance at downing this next week on mains.

Loot Sanctum is go

Ruby Sanctum is out, and at least in normal is pretty easy to do, especially in today's gear with a decent raid comp.

There are lots of strats that say things like kite the dragon in a circle, make sure people run away, etc...
Don't count on pugs to do this, and quite honestly, for most of the mechanics don't worry about it for normal mode.

Let me break this down for you.
All phases: it is a dragon, so it has the usual dragon things...tail swipe (stun, didn't even seem to hit for damage...just don't be a healer getting stunned, or stunned at a horrible time in twilight), cleave, breath

P1: physical realm
This is a tank and spank for the tanks and dps, simply avoid anything on the ground and you win. Heals, and/or casters, get to make use of dispells/decurses (anything except remove poison effects will cleans/dispell the effect). This will drop a circle on the ground that will also knock everybody in it away, the longer the dispell takes, the larger the circle. In normal mode, this doesn't need to be worried about, just drop it where you are as quickly as you can, even if you're melee on the boss. There will only ever be 2 of these drops out at a time, as the oldest fades just as a new one comes out, and it is easy to shift to another place to keep dps'ing. While all this is happening, a spot will be chosen for him to drop a meteor on (easily seen by the fire ground effects for several seconds prior), which will then land and spread fire from it. In 10m normal mode, this fire does almost no damage, so just make sure to move out of it quickly and not get hit by the meteor itself.

P2: twilight realm
This is the same as P1 as far as the dragon is concerned, but the mechanics of the area change. The main 2 differences are as follows. Instead of doing a knockback when dispelled, it is now a pull of those surrounding to the person dispelled. Instead of a meteor dropping, there are orbs that circle around the room (2 in 10 man, 4 in 25), and will charge up periodically. When they charge up, they form a beam between them that cuts the room in half. Simply don't get hit by the beam (it will 1 shot and then teleport you into the physical realm in the process).

P3: both realms
There is nothing special or different in p3, except that now you split up your group and the 2nd tank stops being bored. One tank, and half the dps (generally melee due to the constant movement required) will stay in the twilight realm while the other tank will go back to the physical realm with the other half of the dps. Generally the physical realm takes no damage except for the tank, but the twilight realm does, so if you're using 3 heals in a 10 man, you should leave the 3rd healer in the twilight realm. DPS should be fairly evenly split up here, but if it is not, you can adjust on the fly by sending somebody from one to the other (the portals stay up). This is so that the boss will continue to stay in both realms. Note: if one of the realms wipes, it doesn't wipe the other realm, but halion will start healing in about 10 seconds after nobody is attacking her in a realm much faster than you'll be able to damage her. If you're at 1% or 2%, send a sacrificial dps down to go hit halion a few times to prevent the heal from happening and still burn her down.

Collect loot.

This will take a few wipes for most pugs to understand each phase, but after that should quickly become a joke as all mechanics are simple, straight forward, and with the exception of standing in a meteor landing or the orb link, nothing is all that lethal. The 2 things that will often cause you to wipe are if the tank, or the tank healer, get killed by a beam in the twilight realm.

I found it to be a fun raid encounter, but at least in normal mode it isn't very challenging. This should let a lot of people gear up fairly easily. I'll be doing 25m (hopefully with some heroic attempts) tonight with my guild, so expect some more info then.

Raid Awareness

It is a topic often screamed about over vent, especially after many wipes.
"Pay attention!" "Get out of the fire!" "Why the heck did you get cleaved?"
After a few of these, especially in pugs, you will often hear "Get out of my raid!" along with a raid removal.

So, how do we actually be more raid aware? How do you NOT be that n00b that is oblivious?
There are a few things to do, some easy, some simple, and some that come with observation (counterproductive if you aren't).

1) SEE THE FIGHT!
This sounds obvious, but for so many people, it isn't. You can't be aware of what happens around you when you can't see it!
So here's how:
a) Make your raid frames small, get them out of the way. If you're a healer, keep them semi out of the way, but not burried. You need to see, but if you're only paying attention to a small corner of the screen, you still won't.
b) Put away your meters. Seriously...if you do better dps when you see somebody is ahead of you...stop slacking and do better all the time. Meters will not help you do anything other than hide the fight.
c) Hide addons for buffing and other random displays...you don't need them during a fight, they just cover up what is happening around you.

2) KNOW THE FIGHT!
Yes, we all know the basics of a fight once we've seen it. Hit boss, stay out of fire, run to/away from this person when this happens. But what does it mean to really KNOW a fight?
a) Understand the abilities and how they work. This is simple, go read them on wowwiki. Knowing how slime spray works, or how defile works...will let you react to it in a more intelligent way, such as using nature resist aspects or rocket boots.
b) Use something like DBM (Deadly Boss Mods) to tell you when those abilities are happening. They don't just tell you the raid warning of "Defile on X" when you see a black puddle, they tell you exactly when this is going to happen. You can move the size and style of all those warnings so that they catch your attention at just the right time, but aren't in the way the rest.

3) FOCUS THE BOSS!
Target the boss and type /focus . I don't care if you are healing, dps, or a tank, this can save you lots of headaches. You will be able to see their casts...and if you're smart and have target of target turned on, you'll even see who the defile is being cast on before it happens. If it is you, you can know to run away from the raid even more than your typical spread. If it isn't, you can start to run back in to stay away from the person with the defile. If you're even smarter, you can set up macros that target your focus (or your focus' target) with abilities when a modifier key is held down. This is great when you need to dps one thing and cc another, or do fast target switching but still know if you can pop that aoe ability (like starfall) or if that will just push the boss into the next phase at a bad time.

4) REST!
Seriously. Get some sleep...the extra Red Bull and coffee you just had really don't help, and will be worse later. If you are rested you will be more alert, more reactive, have more stamina to focus, quicker reflexes, and a much higher mental capacity and state of thought.

5) DON'T BE EMOTIONAL!
This is a game. Yes, it is serious and people have more fun when things go down, and you don't want to be the one keeping it from happening. But in the end, it is just a game, so if you screwed up, don't worry about it...just keep performing as you know how. The time to get lost in thought and reflect on how to do better is not in the middle of the fight when malleable is coming at your face...that's the time to move. Reflect on how to do it better while you're collecting loot or doing the corpse run.

6) DON'T BE ON SOMETHING!
a) If you get off on your e-peen...don't be on it. How good you say you are doesn't matter, and it'll just piss people off. Besides, if you have to talk about it instead of it just being noticed, it isn't that big anyway.
b) Don't be getting high. Seriously...if you're high, just walk out and let somebody who doesn't know a thing and has blue gear take your place. They'll do better. This includes getting drunk, among other things.

7) LISTEN AND READ!
Your raid leader will be telling you things...either in raid chat/warnings or in vent. The boss and encounter will also tell you things in emotes and sounds. If you can't hear any of them over your music or see it through the spam on your screen...turn it down instead of rocking out and make a new chat frame with only the raid in it. Great music is great, especially when it puts you in just the right groove...but not at the expense of knowing that you got battle rez'd 2 minutes ago while you were looking at youtube, and you would've let the raid beat the enrage timer they just missed by 5 seconds.

Most fights have gimmicks in them. Most of those gimmicks are easy to avoid if you know their trick. If you have a clear screen they are easy to see. Most of those are easy to spot when you know what is going on. If you can't do any of that, mods, the game, and your raid lead will fill you in...though it'll be delayed. But you'll never be able to do any of that if you aren't rested enough to be alert and are of a clear mind.

The short version...DON'T BE A N00B!
Oh, and BTW...everything up there will also help your tanking or dps/healing output.

What topics do you want to see discussed?

So, I have a ton of topics that I'm happy to post about, but I don't want to just post flood people.

What would you like me to post on, or to discuss? Here's some ideas that I'd like your feedback on, but please feel free to add your own in the comments below for me to consider as well. :)

Building/joining a successful guild, and how to tell if they will be.
Discussions about addons (offer me a few you'd like to hear about, beyond just a "mandatory list").
Discuss strats for being a successful while fighting .
Gearing a , from fresh 80 to progression raider, and why this is done this way.
This will not be a simple gear list for people to choose from, but an educational discussion on why one would choose given pieces, and in what order.
Random funny in game stories.

And the beat goes on...

...to the tune of 4 HM's down in ICC 25. We also managed to do this without taking longer than we did for normal modes the week before. Progression is going well, we now have Heroic down for Marrowgar, Lootship, Dreamwalker, and Rotface. We expect to add at least 2 more to that list next week from the ranks of: Saurfang, Festergut, Princes, Bloodqueen.

Thanks to the 25 man going so smoothly and quickly, we also ran 10 man tonight, took about 3.5 hours to do every boss HM except for LK, and to go for the LK achievement for the meta. Unfortunately, while the stacks hit 32, and 30 stacks are required, the achievement didn't trigger for those of us that didn't have it already. We've put in GM tickets for it, but we doubt we'll get them. But, now just achievements for the meta drakes...the hard stuff is out of the way. :)

Needless to say, I'm excited to be making progress, and making it quickly.

...and another one bites the dust

The king is dead, long live the king!

The guild killed LK in 25 man this week. I'm very happy to get the achievement, and head into hard modes, but we went in with the expectation that we could, and would, get the LK kill...and we did it after only 6 pulls in total..with some people never having had seen it.

So, what does it take to kill LK in 25 man? Well, it's pretty simple actually. stack up, stack up, stack up, run for defile, switch targets quick...rinse and repeat, don't run into orbs. As long as people are raid aware, it becomes a fairly easy fight with this sort of mechanic. I love the rng of the valks picking up random people...despite that we would've killed him on our 3rd attempt if it wasn't a pal healer while the other pal heal dc'd. It keeps the fight from being 100% the same every time.

The thing I really like about the LK fight is that it is NOT a "gear it and win it" fight. Yes, you will need a minimum level of output or survivability, but anybody with some 10 man gear, a piece or 2 of 25 gear, and even some 25 toc gear should have plenty of that at this point, thanks to the 15% buff. What is nice is that this is a fight about awareness and skill of execution. There aren't too many of those left in the game these days.

Here's looking forward to HMs with the guild...some of which are jokes (gunship), and some of which have a gear and skill attribute to them. I have some experience in them from before I joined, but this should be a great time now for us to shine and push our way up the guild ladder quickly. :)

Not bad, considering it became a full 25 man guild just last week, so 1 week of progression is a full clear of available content to us.

Cataclysm - Will it suck?

By now, I'm sure everybody has heard a bunch of rumors and "blue posts" and random factoids about Cataclysm.

Here are my brief thoughts, with a couple reasons:

Druid changes:
1) Druid tank: New AoE bleed sounds really cool, I look forward to seeing how this works in combination with swipe.
2) Druid ability: BRING ON THE SHROOMS! Seriously, this new spell has a lot of potential to be amusing and useful, so long as it isn't abysmally underpowered or way overpowered.
3) Druid Tree: WTF? No more trees? GIMME MY FOREST! Druids are all about forms, if we wanted to stand around in caster form, we'd play....ANYTHING ELSE. We like our forms, don't take them away because you want to show off armor...make armor mold to our forms if you want to show the armor off. Don't be lazy Bliz.

Mark/Honor/etc changes:
This makes sense, but really doesn't change anything other than making bookkeeping (and explanations to new players) easier. 2 tiers of tokens/points...ignore the names and just think arena/honor and progression/prior-tier, and you're set.

Raiding:
WTF? Seriously, everything on 1 lockout? They clearly don't want people like me to play this game, when the only thing I enjoy is raiding. 10 man has the small charm to it, and I love running 10 mans with friends, either to help them out or to bust up an achievement. Then I run the 25's for gear and an actual skill check. Now, don't get me wrong, if Blizz can actually get 10 and 25 man raids to be the same...which they COMPLETELY failed at in WotLK (and let's face it, just scaling the fights means 25 mans can't be as interesting with as many things going on at once), then I'm on board for making 10 and 25 man gear the same types of drops. However, if you're making it so I have to choose to raid with friends vs raid with a guild of great players that I get along with...don't expect me to just go level another alt (which I can't do because I already have max number of chars on the server)...expect me to play less, which will lead to less fun with the game, which will lead to a canceled subscription. On top of that, now we'd be limited to only ever trying one mode and one type, so expect progression guilds to drop to 10 man mode for one boss, go to 25 man for the next, etc...and the whole system is just going to piss people off.

Artwork/Graphics:
The concept art looks amazing in most aspects, and the screenshots look pretty good that have been shown so far. Here's hoping it'll look great, but not make everybody have to get a brand new computer to run it...that's always been one of the nice things about WoW is that you didn't have to have a hardcore gaming system to run it, even if you wanted to be mostly hardcore about playing it. Now, I doubt they can come out with something that won't run on one of my systems acceptably, but I know many people with systems just keeping up with acceptable play levels in WotLK...so let's hope they won't all just stop playing WoW since they have no reason to get a newer computer otherwise, not being hard core gamers.

HELP! GEAR DROPPED! WHAT SHOULD I DO!?

I get this question so often, even from people not my class, that it is no longer funny, nor something I can often be helpful with in a time frame they hope for (while rolling on 1 item vs another).

I could tell you that you should always grab this stat vs that stat, or to tell you to take higher item level gear, or to always use your set bonuses, or to roll on everything usable...but all of those would be wrong answers (I may try to generalize for different gear situations though in the future). The truth is, there is no "easy" way to judge what gear and stat is better (though I think it is plenty easy right now, if you understand how your character works). This is because what stat is better for you will change based on the other stats you currently have.

Let me use a real example for me from recently.
There are 3 trinkets in icc that casters care about: Dislodged Foreign Object (haste with a sp proc on cast), Phylactery of the Nameless Lich (crit with sp proc from dot tick), and Muradin's Spyglass (crit with continual refreshing stacking sp).

When I was in my 3 pc t10 and 2 pc t9, glyphed for insect swarm, my moonfire dots could crit, and my insect swarm did more damage. Now, in 5 pc t10 I'm glyphed for starfall instead of insect swarm, and moonfiire dots can no longer crit, so I don't keep dots up as often. When you look at that, and being at more than 50% crit when raid buffed now, it is no surprise that while Phylactory was by far my BiS (Best in Slot) trinket then...it no longer is, and DFO is now my BiS by a good chunk. The trinkets didn't change, but my gear, stats, and bonuses did.

That being said, since I'm still using Eye of the Broodmother...either one is a HUGE upgrade, so I should, and will, roll on both (I already have Muradin's). I'd love to go get Reign of the Dead, but it just never drops, and the one that would beat out these is the Heroic version...which I doubt I'll be going back to get anytime soon.

So, how does one know? Well, if you're not math oriented, there are a lot of tools out there to help you out. The easiest one though, which helps very quickly answer the "which is better for me now?" question is to go use RAWR. It used to be download and run only, but now has a pretty handy web interface as well (though unfortunately it requires MS Silverlight to use it that way). You can find Rawr here:

Downloadable:http://rawr.codeplex.com
Web usable:http://www.elitistjerks.com/rawr.php

Once you load it up, go to the file menu and choose Load from Armory, put in your realm and character, and go forth. When you want to compare things, just choose that slot from the drop down on the right (just above the gear list that looks like a bar graph).
For dps, it is pretty simple...the larger the bar, the better the item is for you right now.
For tanking it can be a little bit different, as you have threat, survivability, and mitigation. You can sort by all of them, depending on what you need/want more of at that moment, as well as how the items are overall (which uses all 3 rankings).

I'm not going to go into the details of everything you can do with Rawr at this point, likely I will in a later post...but this should allow you to look at the gear you want to compare, and with reasonable certainty, know if it is better, similar but different, or worse.

The Short Version:
Don't trust a BiS list, or that Blizard's tier items are going to be the best. Figure out the math, or use a modeling tool like Rawr, to see what is actually helping you the most.

Blogging is go!

Due to popular request from many druid friends for information, tips, and gear/rotation help, I will be starting a blog.

This seemed like a good place to get started with a placeholder, so here it is. If I don't end up using blogger, I'll link to the blog location here.

The focus of this blog will be WoW from a druid perspective. I raid hardmode content as a boomkin and a bear, and have a background as a kitty as well. That being said, I also have many casual players as friends, and there will be lots of advice on how best to play, how to work with the gear sets that are likely available to you, and discussions about which talents are best in various situations and why. If you like the concept of theorycrafting to be most effective, but hate all of the math, you'll probably like how I discuss things and offer suggestions.

I realize there are many blogs out there on the subject, as well as countless forum posts in several high profile boards such as elitist jerks. I do not intend to copy them, nor discredit them, and likely will be basing some of my information on what is said in them.

Look forward to an update within the next month or so for me to get started.
